Underground gas storage
UGS - with cushion gas on site
Engas' site was historically focused on the storage of natural gas, using the low quality gas contained in the structure for low cost and faster implementation.
Active capacity of 700 mcm
As initial step, Engas prepared a turn key project for an UGS with an active capacity of 700 mcm in well explored gas bearing layers, taking advantage of good physical properties of cushion gas with high CO2 content, and connected to the international pipeline network. A new prospection drilling and additional geological research conducted recently allowed for enlarging the licensed geographical sector.
Geopolitics and reversed flows
Originally well placed at the main natural gas flows to consumers in Western Europe, the site lost its strategic attractiveness for UGS over time. The direction and abundance of gas flows changed along with geopolitics, a trend likely to be sustained.
A gas resort with high CO2 content - the original burden converted to a top benefit.
A lead in decarbonization
Today, the geological basis for the turn key UGS project is the perfect nucleus for designing and implementing the initial step of one of the first on-shore CCS in Europe. The structure already contains substantial amounts of CO2, and its tightness and safety is confirmed.
